Testicular Cancer -- One Man’s Journey

Rudy was only 16 when he first noticed symptoms that would later be diagnosed as testicular cancer. Years later, he is a true survivor. How’d he do it?

It’s likely that had Rudy been looking for it he would have found his cancer long before it caused pain or spread, says Onel. Men who notice a painless lump, hardening, swelling, a feeling of heaviness, fluid accumulation, or pain in either testicle should visit their doctor or urologist immediately. “Don’t wait or hope for it to go away,” says Onel. “Do the exam in the shower on the first of the month, every month so you can notice if something changes over time,” he recommends.

        Looking for Cancer
According to the National Cancer Institute, about 7,400 men in the United States are diagnosed with testicular cancer each year. Although testicular cancer accounts for only 1 percent of all cancers in men, it is the most common form of cancer in young men between the ages of 15 and 35. Monthly self-exams -- long advocated for women as their best defense against breast cancer -- should be a part of every man’s life as well, says Erol Onel, M.D., chief of the division of andrology and sexual dysfunction in the department of urology at New England Medical center in Boston, Mass. But are they? Not nearly often enough, says Onel.
